Central Market
Central Market
Location: Along Jalan Hang Kasturi, opposite the Dayabumi Complex
Attractions: Bars, Restaurants, Handicraft shops
Highlights: Puppet shows, Cultural Shows
Also called Pasar Seni or Pasar Budaya, Central Market is actually one of the main attractions in Kuala Lumpur. This indoor marketplace is housed in an old building that was built by the British, in 1888. Earlier it used to be a wet market for the city inhabitants. Later it was revamped and expanded several times, though it took its final structure in 1933. During 1970's, the Malaysian Heritage Society acclaimed the building as a 'Heritage Site' when its demolition was intended.
The original art-deco building was converted into a nice dining hall, soon after. In the year 1985, Central Market was restored and reopened as the foremost Cultural Shopping Centre of Malaysia. That's the history, but as of now, this market is a full-fledged cultural center in Kuala Lumpur. Indeed it is the best place to glimpse the Malaysian arts & crafts. If you're looking to buy souvenirs and rare pieces of handicrafts, Central Market or CM is the place to head for.
Here you can find an exclusive variety of handicrafts, paintings, local crafts, t-shirts, antiques and that too, at reasonable prices. But yes, you need to be an expert at bargaining. Otherwise, you could be at loss. Perhaps you might find this two-floor building better than the plush shopping malls because it has each and every thing, ranging from restaurants, bars to ample of shopping outlets. Moreover, numerous money exchangers and ATM machines are close at hand just in case, you fall short of money.
Here you can also see the Malaysian artists engrossed in their artworks. You can order custom-made crafts or get your portrait painted; it's just about everything in this market. There is also an open-air theatre, just outside the market, where traditional dances, puppet shows, street performances and even, weekly cultural shows are organized to keep people amused. To sum up, Central Market depicts the cultural heritage of Malaysia and is a not-to-be-missed-out destination in Kuala Lumpur

Tugu Negara...National Monument
Tugu Negara
Location: Along Jalan Tugu, Near the Malaysian Houses of Parliament
Significance: National Monument of Malaysia
Tugu Negara is an imposing sculpture in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, along the Jalan Tugu. It commemorates the soldiers who died in Malaysia's struggle for freedom, particularly during World War II and the Malayan Emergency. The Tugu Negara literally connotes 'National Monument' in Malay. Elevated to the height of 15 meters (49.21 feet), Tugu Negara is identified as the largest freestanding bronze sculptures grouping in the world.
The monument illustrates a group of soldiers holding the Jalur Gemilang, the national flag of Malaysia, high in the air. Each of the bronze figures represents elements, such as, leadership, suffering, unity, vigilance, strength, courage, and sacrifice. Designed by Austrian sculptor Felix de Weldon, the sculpture was built in 1966. On 8 February 1966, Tugu Negara was formally opened by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and declared a memorial park dedicated to 11,000 heroes who died during the twelve-year Malayan Emergency.
Ever since, on the Heroes Day (July 31) annually, the Prime Minister, Military Heads and the Police pay homage to the fallen heroes by laying garlands at the memorial. The monument's granite base bears the following inscriptions in English with Roman script and Malay with Jawi script: "Dedicated to the heroic fighters in the cause of peace and freedom, May the blessing of Allah be upon them."
In 1975, the monument underwent a major damage because of an explosion set off by a terrorist. However, the monument was restored to its original state soon. After erecting a fence, the complex was stated a protected area between sunset and dawn. On a daily basis, a soldier raises the national flag in evening and lowers it in morning. Encircled by a pool of water fountains and water lilies, the Tugu Negara is a nice place to spend some time in tranquility.

Kuala Lumpur Tower
Kuala Lumpur Tower
Location: Jalan Punchak, Off Jalan P.Ramlee
Built During: 1991-95
Altitude: 421 meter
Attractions: Revolving restaurant, Pedestrian Mall
Significance: KL Tower symbolizes Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur Tower, formally called Menara Kuala Lumpur, is an elevated tower to be found in Kuala Lumpur. Built during 1991-95, the tower is utilized for communication purposes. On 1 Oct' 1996, the Kuala Lumpur Tower was officially inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia. It features an antenna, which soars up to 421 m (1,381 ft); thus, making it the world's fifth tallest tower at present. Its roof lies at the height of 335 m (1,099 ft).
The rest of the tower beneath comprises a staircase and an elevator to reach the upper area, which has a revolving restaurant that offers guests a panoramic view of the city. Annually, races are prearranged where contestants race up the stairs to the top. For seeing the crescent moon, the tower turns into the Islamic falak observatory to celebrate the fasting month of the Muslims. Also referred as KL Tower, the construction of the tower was actually a 3-phase process that started on Oct' 1991.
While the first phase saw widening of the Jalan Punchak and excavation of soil, the second phase started with the construction of the foundation and basement of the KL Tower. During its construction, for 31 hours about 50,000 cubic meters of concrete were poured incessantly, making a record in the construction industry of Malaysia. In May 1993, the third phase of constructing 'superstructure' was started which included creation of the tower shaft and the tower head.
While the tower head was getting finishing touch, the construction of the touristic building started. This tourist attraction is festooned with designs that signify the country's Islamic culture. At the upper ground floor, the main porch is adorned with wonderful glass-clad domes which shine like solitaires. Each of the domes was designed and arranged like the Muqarnas by the Iranian craftsmen. In short, KL Tower is an architectural wonder that should not-be-missed-out during a trip to Kuala Lumpur.
Some Interesting Facts About Kuala Lumpur Tower
The Kuala Lumpur Tower is the fifth tallest telecommunication tower in the world.
Though the tower was constructed to improve the quality of telecommunication services and the clarity of broadcasting, it actually stands for the symbol of Kuala Lumpur.
The whole structure of the KL Tower is divided into 5 different parts, including the foundation base, the touristic building, the tower shaft, the tower head, and the tower head.
Its foundation base accommodates 3 basement floors for safety purposes, storage and maintenance work.
Its touristic building houses the administration office, souvenir shops and a 146 mtr pedestrian mall with gushing pools.
Its tower shaft consists of 22 levels with 4 elevators and flights of stairs, having 2,058 steps.
Its tower head has the public observation platform and revolving restaurant, together with the telecommunication & broadcasting stations.
Its antenna mast holds the tower and is particularly used for telecommunication and broadcasting transmissions.
While constructing the KL Tower, the constructors took special care to raise a retaining wall around a century-old Jelutong tree (Dyera Costulata). To evade damaging the huge tree, the tower was moved at a cost of RM 430,000.
Kuala Lumpur Tower is controlled by Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn. Bhd., which is an entirely owned subsidiary of the Telekom Malaysia Group.
The KL Tower made the first pit-stop in the Amazing Race Asia 1.
The tower is distinctly known for housing the highest McDonalds in the world.

Climate of Malaysia
Climate of Malaysia
Climate: Tropical
Average Temperature: 20°C - 30°C
Malaysia essentially observes tropical weather, but the best part is it is never too hot. Humidity is a common feature, which can be duly expected from its proximity to waters. With the exception of highlands, the climate is by and large moderately hot and extremely sultry. Throughout the year, the temperature ranges from 20°C to 30°C on an average.
Mostly tropical climate is experienced round the year. However, the monsoon varies on the coastline of Peninsular Malaysia. On the west coast, the rainy season extends from September to December, whereas the months from October to February receive rainfall on the east coast. As regards East Malaysia, it collects heavy rains between the months of November to February.
While Peninsular Malaysia receives average rainfall of 2500 mm, East Malaysia thrives in 5080 mm of rain. Monsoon season is on its peak from November to February, though August proves to be the wettest month on the west coast. On the whole, days are quite warm and nights are pretty cool in Malaysia. And its pleasant weather is always inviting.

Recently in 2003, the street underwent a major renovation and got two Chinese arches placed at its both ends. The best part about this street is, people know that they are buying fakes still this market fascinate not only tourists but locals as well. And that's what, which makes Petaling Street a distinguished place to shop for counterfeit branded products.
If you're looking for cheap clothes, fabrics, handbags, souvenirs, electronic items, watches, CDs, Chinatown is the just right place to aim for. While buying things from this market, prepare yourself to bargain a lot because things, like watches, clothing and all other counterfeit items, are quoted on higher prices. It is very much possible that you might get things on half or one-third of the quoted rates using right techniques of haggling.
Chinatown, along with its distinct shop houses, colorful temples, great restaurants and bustling night market, still retains the charm and character of the times past. The area is also known for housing many budget hotels that are smaller family owned hotels, which offer clean rooms and personalized services. In a nutshell, Petaling Street is a place that virtually never sleeps; the activities of haggling and eating can be seen here until the wee hours of morning.

Kuala Lumpur Nightlife
Kuala Lumpur Nightlife
The sophisticated city of Kuala Lumpur undeniably observes loquacious and gushing nightlife. In fact, the metro dazzles vibrantly when the sun retires to its couch. And the nightclubs arrange their paraphernalia rightly to coax the masses. If truth is to be told, the entire city shrouds in pubs, lounges, bars, & discotheques in the hours of darkness; these joints spare no efforts to entertain the night traffic.
A great deal of lounging, dancing, and boozing can be seen explicitly in these nightclubs. At such places, you can spot the hottest babes and the coolest chaps dancing away to glory. Most of the KL's happening nightclubs are located near Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan P. Ramlee. Indeed the hotels are also not behind to offer glittering extravaganza in dark hours. And as expected, your expense would be determined by the club or lounge you select to spend some lively hours.
The bustling activities generally start from 10pm onwards, however some nightclubs unwrap earlier. Among the Chinese, Karaoke is a popular activity in which they get to croon oldies and current pop music from Hong Kong. Seeing that Malaysia is a Muslim country, the authorities put in force 3am closure for nightspots in city areas, though clubs and pubs in urban residential areas must close up by 1 am. Amongst the extensive range of nightspots in Kuala Lumpur, check out what suits you the best.

Music is another feature, with occasional live bands to keep the patrons amused. Most of the bars are typical having casual décor and dim lighting; while some have their own themes which could range from Cuban, Japanese to Classic-retro.
Cafes & Restaurants
During the dark hours, the city folks also like going to cafes that mingle pub and bar-like atmosphere, along with the dining opportunities of a restaurant. A few cafes and restaurants have a big al-fresco dining area, in the company of a DJ. Here people can choose from a wide range of local and international liquor. Such restaurants usually have an arena for performances by bands and solo artistes. Hard Rock Café and Planet Hollywood are rated amongst the top in this category.
Karaoke Lounges
Nowadays, karaoke lounges are getting more and more popular in Kuala Lumpur. With the youth always desiring something different, Karaoke make a novel choice where people get to sing. The design & décor of these lounges differ as per their space arrangement. Most of them have the Chinese theme. Here patrons can pick from a series of local and international hits from the TV, turn on the volume, pick up the microphone and sing in the way, they want.
